There are two different types of variables:
- Report Variables
- Data Variables
Report Variables
Report variables are generally used for a larger scheme of information, such as periods, entities, geographical locations, divisions, and more.
Data Variables
Data Variables are used within the report documents, with the goal of automating the documents so that in future years the data will automatically update itself saving time from if you had to manually change these values from year to year.
You can create a variable in one object and then import it to any other object across the report, using it in any object you wish, it will be tied to the data where you created the variable, however. It is suggested to make a separate sheet for variables, for example, have a separate variable sheet for periods and this is where you will be editing the data for the Data Variable.
From this separate sheet, you can create a Data Variable to insert wherever you please in the report. Variables exist to make life easier with year-to-year data shown in the reports.
