An organization chart or "org chart" is a diagram that displays a reporting or relationship hierarchy. The most frequent application of an org chart is to show the structure of a business, government, or other organization.
Org charts have a variety of uses and can be structured in many different ways. They might be used as a management tool, for planning purposes, or as a personnel directory, for example.
Note: Organizational charts are designed exclusively for digital viewing. In the case of large organizations, consider dividing charts into departmental segments for clarity.
Creating Org Charts
To create an organizational chart in ClearGov:
- Navigate to Charts in the left-hand navigation menu.
- Select Create New Chart.
- For the Chart Type, select Organizational Chart
- Select Default Tree for the Chart Style. The layout can be changed after your chart has been generated.
- Select the Generate Chart button.
Org Chart Settings
In the lefthand Chart Settings menu you can toggle the chart title on or off, and include a description of the chart. Descriptions are internal only (not displayed within the Chart) and can be a maximum of 500 characters.
Org Chart Builder
The Chart Builder will automatically include one default card for you to use as a starting point when building your org chart. The following actions can be taken on cards:
- 4-way arrow icon - move the card
- Pencil icon - edit the card details
- Trash can icon - delete the card
- Plus sign icon - add a new card to the current card
Creating New Cards
To begin building out your org chart, select the plus sign icon (+) to add a new card. Inside of the Create New Card screen, customize the new card by entering information and modifying the appearance of the text.
Card Types
There are three levels of card types to choose from, each one connecting to the existing card at a different level in the organization.
- Child card - This creates a new branch in the org chart tree below the parent card (the card we selected the plus sign icon (+) on).
- Partner card - This adds a position at the same level of the parent card, indicating equal standing in the organizational structure.
- Assistant card - This inserts a supporting role connected to the parent card, shown with a side link to represent a non-direct reporting role.
Card Details
- Each card contains three lines to include text such as the individual’s name (Line 1), their title (Line 2), and their department or division (Line 3).
- Select the B icon to bold the text, and the I icon to italicize the text.
- Select how you want the text to be aligned: left justified, centered, or, right justified.
- Change the text’s font color by selecting a color from the picker tool, or by typing in a color hex code.
Further customize the card by adding an image, changing the card’s color, and controlling the format of the line running from this card to the parent card by choosing a solid line or dotted line for the Connection Line.
Reordering and Editing Cards
Reordering Cards
Move cards around by selecting the 4-way arrow icon in the top left corner of the card, then dragging and dropping the card to reposition it in the chart.
If you run out of working space in the Chart Builder, select the empty square icon (shown in the image above) to re-center your organization chart.
Editing Cards
Edit cards by selecting the pencil icon. In the edit screen, you can:
- Edit the card details.
- Upload or change the card image.
- Change the card color.
- Change the card layout. Note: The change is only reflected for the specific parent card rather than all cards across the entire chart, and this option is only available for the last parent card of each branch of the Org Chart Tree.
